Welcome back, my fellow creatives! We’ll continue tasting the wares of fellow indie authors I have gotten to know in this beautiful community through the years.

I’m thrilled to share some flavors delicious with ambition and yearning today. Let’s take a sip from The Unraveling of Lady Fury by Shehanne Moore.
What does a reader experience in those opening pages, and what lessons can a writer take away in studying but a few paragraphs? Let’s find out!
If you do not see the audio player above, you can access the podcast here.
If you’re ever curious for exploring historical worldbuilding, writing strong heroes and heroines, and meeting other fantastic authors, do check out Lady Shey’s wonderful blog.
Be on the look out for more sweet indie goodness in the autumn podcasts to come!
Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!

What a fine and worthy post Ms Lee. All the best to you and magical Ms S.

Lady J, this is epically kind and wholly unexpected. Truly. Not been able to get my head fully up this week over sorting all the mess with the Mr’s CD he did the lyrics for. Finally every box is ticked re the production but my head was fair done in , so I just left a ton of tabs up here from blogs to come back to seeing the powerful study in character on this first chapter. So I clicks it open there and sees Fury. I actually thought what is she doing here! Totally never expected this but love your dissection. And giggled when you said you don’t normally read romance cos frankly I don’t think I write it!! Ha ha. But yeah I do like to take my time introducing my very flawed characters who I don’t want people to dislike entirely either at this stage but I can’t go the easy way either of, ‘Oh poor me, here are all the reasons I need you to like me.’ I like the stakes on the table and these stakes are always desperate ones. And I liked you could see that she had past baggage and that that baggage might well relate to the 4th man.Love you for this. You are an angel xxxxx

Oh huzzah to CD completion and hugs to you! You’ve warmed my heart. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, and your characters are FUN to study, which is more than I can say for a lot of characters I’ve read. They’re actual people who are doing their best, and they’re not always nice, and yet we can sympathize with what they’re doing and why. That, Sweet Lady Shey, makes for such compelling fiction that no matter what genre bookshelves peg it, it is always magnificent storytelling. xxxxxxxx

Jean xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Now you made my day. I just like writing about the past and reading about the past and I ended up doing romance as a way in to writing. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I can totally see that, Shey! Sometimes the genre shows up along the way. What matters is the story needed to be told, and was. 🙂 xxxxxxxx

I like the sound of these characters and although romances aren’t my thing either, from what you’ve told us, I imagine the drama, intrigue and the humour of this book make it a really good read!

Lol Chris, gonna admit it now, they’re not my thing either. xx

Exactly, Chris! There’s so, so much more going on here than just a typical genre “peg.” Love it!

Jean it is lovely to hear your recent podcasts featuring current indie authors – especially as both your listeners and the authors know you give them a fair crack of th whip without fear or favour.
It was especially good to see Shehanne Moore featured here. I read two of Shey’s books and like you discovered, during your exploration of the opening chapter, although romance might be her chosen genre, it does not define or put limits on the scope of Shey’s work. She is not only good fun for the reader but also a joy to read as a writer.
To put it quite simply she doesn’t miss a trick. Both books I read where incredibly high octane, rich in character, tension, plot twists and a dark veined humour throwing out nods from popular culture. (Shey is very well read.) The historical details are accurate but delicate -no beating the reader over the head with acres of dense description. You are left with the feeling that not only are you in that time period but you belong there. Remember everyone who ever lived, no matter in what period, thought they were thoroughly modern and at the height of civilisation, no matter how horrific that period seems to us.
Really great to hear your insightful thoughts on someone I have deep personal and professional respect and liking for. Thoroughly enjoyable episode

Paul, Jees, I am touched by all you’ve said. Truly. We have had many conversations, haven’t we, re how everyone thinks they are thoroughly modern in their time. Let’s mot even start re what future generations will think of us! You’ve made my day with this lovely comment, truly. Totally brightened it in face. Thank you so much x

Yes! You just struck All the Things 🙂 Because Shey has such a vivid depth to her setting and complete knowledge of the characters and their conflicts, she’s able to let the characters propel the story forward where THEY will take it. It’s like Shey’s just along to take it all in, so no choices are forced or contrived. She’s just a joy to read, she really is. xxxxxx

Hell, you’re a joy to know. I want to kill my characters half the time. Honestly. I kid you not when Flint appeared on the scene and was awful instead of the old friend I had decided upon, And then he came out with the stuff on Jamaica, I thought WHAT? When Southey said, ‘You was never in Jamaica was you?’ he sort of mirrored my thoughts. They don’t ever do a thing I would like them to. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

And that, Lady Shey, is what we love about them. They are unpredictable and fascinating!

Well, I am just going to say that the heroine I am editing is what we would call here.. a belter. She wasn’t meant to be . She started out being airy-fairy nice. I don’t know what happened. I guess she probably did!! xxxx
