Story Empire Highlight: Crafting Book Blurbs

Welcome back, my fellow creatives!

The end-of-school-year chaos has hit full throttle. Concerts, job interviews, graduation parties, field trips–everyone’s got to be everywhere all at once whether our vehicles work or not. It’s been a HELLUVA May so far, let me tell you.

Earlier this month, I pondered the impact of publishing trends on the stories we see, read, or even write. As we prepare our books for their publication days, we may find ourselves watching those trends, connecting with others for a good word or three for the cover, and…oh yeah. The blurb.

Crafting a compelling blurb that entices readers to select YOUR story for checkout is no easy task.

Stand back and hover above; try to create mood, feeling and value for what you have written, rather than describing it in endless detail. -Alison Baverstock, “How to Write a Book Blurb”

Some years back, I wrote about the struggle to create a decent book blurb. Thankfully, Deborah Jay shares a more current take along with easy steps to ensure your book blurb hooks readers.

I love Deborah’s steps here, as they expose the primary cogs of the blurb machine. If we don’t properly fit those four cogs where they belong, the blurb won’t work, pure and simple. I hope you find Deborah’s insights here helpful in ensuring your next book’s blurb sells your story. Ethically, even. 🤣

Coming up, I’ve got more podcasts and interviews, resource highlights and music, aaaaaaaaaaand some camping adventures!

Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!
