Welcome back, Friends! This week in my meandering through recommended reads, I’m returning to a realm of fantasy and history.

The genre tastes here will vary widely, so bring your sparkling water to cleanse the palate between sips. We end August with…

What does a reader experience in those opening pages, and what lessons can a writer take away in studying but a few paragraphs? Letβs find out!
If you do not see the audio player above, you can access the podcast here.
This book was recommended to me by indie author Jason Savin himself–I’m honored! I do hope you check out his lovely book, available for free on Kindle Unlimited as well as in paperback.
If there are any stories you would like to recommend for sipping on this podcast, let me know in the comments below! I may just have to dedicate a month to reading indie authors…or perhaps a season? π
Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!

Oh, what a tease you are with these! I simply love a fairy tale…

Very enjoyable. Lovely reading as always Jean. It is easy to see the amount of skill Jason brings to his writing. If something sounds effortless, that speaks volumes for the amount of effort the writer put into it (so the reader doesn’t have to). Each story while related thematically stood on its own. There is a great deal of clarity about who the narrator is and the narrators’ experiences. The language was effective- descriptive and charming creating an appropriate otherworldliness- with skillful plays on fairy folktale tropes while making them his own and producing something fresh.

Agree on every count, my friend! I’m noticing the fun challenge of voice in short fiction, too–it’s dangerous sounding too much the same in a short story collection, but Jason avoids that danger with ease. π

Oh, I’m honored you liked it! I love sharing what I can with fellow writers. I really don’t have folks in my Wisconsin life who are creatives, so this community is where I find the support I need to keep writing…and this site lets me share the love! xxxxxxxx
