Happy Wednesday, one and all! We’ll continue to celebrate Wyrd and Wonder with another fantasy read on Story Cuppings: The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk.
What does a reader experience in those opening pages, and what lessons can a writer take away in studying but a few paragraphs? Let’s find out together.
If you do not see the audio player above, you can access the podcast here.
I hope you enjoy this sip from The Midnight Bargain with me! Here’s awesome indie author S.J. Higbee’s review of the book for a more complete take on it. 🙂
If there are any stories you would like to recommend for sipping on this podcast, let me know in the comments below! I’d also welcome reading any indie authors’ own stories. Let’s all enjoy different genres and styles of storytelling throughout the year, shall we? xxxxxx
Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!

I looked her up on Wikipedia. She’s been prolific: from 2018 thru the present she has published four books.

Thank you! I never get to talk about books like this with my students.

That’s a pity. I’m sure it would be enriching.

You provide an excellent analysis of the book’s construction, Jean. One that makes us think as writers of our own approach.

Many thanks! I’m debating if I want to do a classic next, or an indie book….decisions decisions!

Sure whatever you decide you will bring your Holmesian analysis into play … much to our enjoyment

I really enjoy your chatty style, Jean. It’s like you’re sitting just across the room from me and I love they way your personality brims over. Your analysis is particularly interesting to me as a writer: the pitfalls we hope to avoid… That’s the thing though, isn’t it? Once you become a writer you never read in quite the same ‘carefree’ way again!
As a reader, I love the idea of the story. I’m tempted… books, magic, a woman held back by society… Good review across the way, too. Will it fit on that tottering pile..?
See you next time 🙂

Next time, indeed! On the one hand, I did like this idea of magic users in a Pride and Prejudice kind of society. Reading SJ Higbee’s take on the book, though, and I decided not to keep going, at least for now. Maybe I’ll come back to it at a later time, for as you said, the world sounds fascinating!
And I’m so glad you’re enjoying the podcast. It’s such a wonderful outlet to talk about books. No one around me reads stuff like this!

Sometimes it feels like the act of reading is a dying art.

Hooray! I hope you like the newest one I just put up. 🙂 Hugs to you from Wisconsin! I’ve gotten my mountain of finals to sift through once again, so my time here’s always too damn short. Damnity damn damn.
